Mac 101: Preparing your old Mac for sale or recycling

If that Mac is an Intel Mac, you could get the Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD for 29 USD and use that to perform a clean install and choose "ZERO OUT" in the Security Options of Disk Utility.

Btw, if you have another Mac with Firewire and the Mac you want to sell has Firewire, you could use Target Disk Mode.

Or if you have neither the money for the Upgrade DVD nor another Mac nor Firewire, you could just create a new admin account via System Preferences > Accounts and then login to that new account, delete the old account and then use Disk Utility to "ERASE FREE SPACE" and choosing ZERO OUT as method.
