In Windows, one can format a new hard drive using Full Format -- which checks every sector of the drive and marks out any bad sectors; or a Quick Format, which just writes out the filesystem structures.

What is the equivalent of Full Format in Leopard?

Sorry for asking a n00b question!

Open Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app) and check out the security options under the Erase tab.

The default setting is pretty much the equivalent of Quick Format.
