Hello everybody, been trying to solve this problems for days, no luck, hope you can help me out.

I have mac, which is connected to TV via mini display port/HDMI adapter.
All works fine, audio and video are sent from mac and played on TV.

Secondly i have DC amplifier connected to mac via Headphones port (and AUX on amp). Also here all works fine, music sent from mac is played on external speakers feed by amp.

The problem is, how to connect TV to DC amp, via mac.
What i need mac to do, is just to get the audio from tv via HDMI and forward it to headphones port.

I used soundflower, but no luck.
Was trying to change settings on AudioMidiSetup, but when choosing HDMI, it cant be choosed as input, but output only
Was playing with sound in system preferences....no luck again.
Can anyone help me?
Thanx in advance and good luck to you all.
Andrej

Assuming your TV is HDMI ARC capable (audio return channel), it can send its audio back to the device via HDMI (in theory).
As you noticed, your adapter (if any at all) cannot receive/pass through this audio signal. AFAIK Macs can only receive HDMI Audio/Video via a USB grabber.
- What comes to mind, is the optical out of your TV. If your amp has an optical-in, this would be a possible and lossless transmission.
- Of course you could use an analog switch to select between your Mac's headphone jack and your TV's analog line-out as input for your amp.
Maybe add some infos on the TV and the amp to receive better help.

Edit: What Mac are we talking about? There were some models with optical I/O via SPDIF through the headphone jack or even a dedicated port.

I also think using ARC or Optical Out on your TV directly to the Amp is your best bet.

1) Assuming your TV has an ARC port (usually that's a certain HDMI port, eg. labelled "HDMI 2 / ARC"), and your Amp has an HDMI-in port.
2) If TV has optical-out and amp has optical-in, using straight Optical audio cable.
3) If TV doesn't have optical-out, and amp doesn't have an HDMI-in but does have Optical-In, you can get HDMI->Optical cables

I agree with @arw that I think this is best bet, as I don't think you can do it via the Mac.

Thanks you both, for your quick replies.

TV is Samsung TU-7092, with eARC port, and optical audio out port.
Amp is a vintage Tehnics SU-8080, made in 1980. So no optical in. (but really good amp)
Mac is Macbook Pro mid 2012 with thunderbolt port.

What do you mean with; -
Of course you could use an analog switch to select between your Mac's headphone jack and your TV's analog line-out as input for your amp.
?
Thanx again, bellow in attachment my idea of configuration

- You won't get HDMI audio back to your Mac this way.
- If you want to make use of the TV's digital/optical OUT, you need an optical (Toslink) to analog converter to feed your AMP or a Toslink-to-USB interface to feed it into your Mac
- I was talking about an analog switch: Input_1: your Mac's line out, Input_2: TV's analog line-out (or the analog signal of the Toslink-converter), Output: your AMP
(see attached example)
Your MacBook unfortunately only has optical OUT, not IN (Apple: "Support for audio line out (digital/analog)").

Maybe there is a way to split the HDMI cable and add a HDMI-USB-grabber but that seems dubious and expensive.

I'm wondering if maybe an HDMI audio extractor would work for your use case like the below.

We use these on some AV installations where I work. It splits the audio out into a separate analog audio 3.5 mm out while also passing the original HDMI audio and video through.
