Background - I've got a first-gen iPod touch. It has an 8gb capacity. I have around 40 gigs of music.

Because my library is larger than my iPod, I obviously cannot just have it synch with my library. I am fine manually adding songs to my iPod, but what bugs me is that I have no clue how to "update" those songs without removing them and re-adding them (if lyrics are added, artwork, play count, etc.).

Is there a way to have my iPod touch synch the only files I choose to put on it?

Thanks.

Make a playlist, or several, and sync only selected playlists to your iPod.

For example, I basically have two playlists I sync with my iPod -- one with all my top-rated songs that I want to have with me at all times, and one that holds about a gig of my "least recently played" songs.

I just made an "iPod" playlist, as I never actually play off of playlists anyways :p

Thanks again. Didn't realize you could have it just synch selected playlists.

In iTunes you just have to check "manually manage music and videos" and you can drag-n-drop to your hearts content. :)

That is what I did before, except it prevented me from "updating" the files without removing them and then re-adding them.

you don't have to play the playlist, thats just a way to get your music on your touch. A large single playlist is nice, however it makes it tough keeping up and cycling your music for me at least. Thats good though that you got what you were looking for.
