At first, this may seem like a dumb and obvious question...but its not lol

I just got a DP 1.25 ghz g4...and I currently use a PC for all my stuff.

I want to get all my mp3's, pictures, and other files from my old pc to my new mac.

the problem is, the pc dosnt have a cd burner.

Ive thought about taking my pc to my brothers house, networking it to his, then using his cd burner, but thats way more complicated than i think it needs to be.

Can I connect the two with USB somehow???

Whats the best way to do this??

move to mac

It is possible and apple has even got a software to do the work for you. Is on the apple storemove 2 mac you can read up on it. Good luck!

Do they both have ethernet ports? Maybe a crossover cable would work? They sell them at Radio Shack, etc. But i don't know how the OS's would see each other.

Whats the best way to do this??

Buy a thumb/mini/pen (call it anything you like) drive. For USB 2.0, approx $50 for 256MB or $120 for 512MB, check the web. It will serve you a lifetime of hasslefree data-transfer or porting or backup, and it's small enough to just add to your key-chain! Works with PC/Mac usb drives without any issue. I use it all the time.

Of course, if you already have an iPod, i am guessing you could use that to do all that, using it as a USB portable HDD with oodles of space ;)
(I don't own an iPod).

I've done it..

I just got a 17" powerbook and before that had only used my PC for files. It took a while and a few tries but I finally got the 2 computers to see eachother with a crossover cable. First i tried a direct firewire link but the PB does not support IP's over firewire. WHen the comptuers are connected over the crossover they are both assigned an IP. Then go to the finder and at the top click GO>Connect to Server. Then type smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (the IP of your PC computer), this will bring up a login dialog to enter in your user name and password for your PC. It will then give you a list of shared fodlers to add to your desktop. Click the shared folder you want and then it becomes a drive on your desktop. Then transfering goes at about 10MB/sec. very fast...if you need anymore help PM me.

I believe any Ethernet cable will work because newer Mac hardware/OS X will recognize it and convert it into a crossover signal..should save you some money there. Enable file sharing on the windows PC and then connect to the PC via Finder... ideally the Mac will recognize the PC w/o trouble and all should go well..

The Missing Manual "Switching to the Mac," goes into this step in detail... sorry that's all I remember..

KBFinFan is right - another beautiful ferature of Macs is that you don't specifically need a crossover cable to network to another computer - the Mac is smart enough to find the other machine no matter what! Now the trick is how friendly the PC will be to you. ;)

Im going to try Move2Mac. It seems like it will be the easiest and its not all the expensive.

I just dont want to have to mess around with networking them because I took the NIC card our of my PC. And also, I only have one monitor, so i will install the stuff on the pc, then switch the monitor and let the mac transfer the files over.

But the requirements for Move2Mac did not mention XP?? Im sure it will still work, or they just havnt updated the page since the release of XP. Hmmmm

Thanks for the help though!!!

(I also have a USB CD burner...but the last time I hooked it up, it didnt want to work the XP...so i suppose I will try that again as well.)
