Does anybody know how to get Safari to open Microsoft Office files instead of just downloading them and then looking for them?

Uh.... Safari is a web browser. To open Office files you will need something capable of opening Office files... google Open Office.

Safari doesn't open MS Office files. Are you talking about the option in Safari > Preferences > General to "Open "safe" files after downloading"? Checking that option will make such files open with the app that's associated with them.
