I am wondering how to download skype for the iphone? I cannot download it through itunes store, as I live in Canada. Is there an alternative route?

You may create a US based iTunes account for free. There's no need for a credit card. You might need to provide an address in the US though. I live in Switzerland and downloaded Pandora this way.
