But it used to be encoded in ALAC. Has it been changed by now?AirPlay is even more restricted.

I can imagine Homepods sounding great with vocals. Usually speakers that are low on bass are better for vocals.

The computer tab only recognizes movies with .mp4 format and audio at DD 5.1. It doesn't recognize .mkv and it cannot decode True HD or DTS-HD. Infuse handles them.which oled tv do you have? why not use the "computer" tab on the Apple TV to get your movies to show on the tv? is Infuse better? just curious.
the rest of your post is beyond me, lol.
Not going to ditch speakers that cost 20K for sure.Short of a splitter or receiver, something's gotta give. Ditch the Apple TV & get the cheapest mini plugged direct to tv via HDMI (or TB for 4K) & use infuse/plex on the mini with the audio out to your DAC that way.
If you're fixated on the Apple TV, ditch the speakers in favour of something like the KEF LSX II that have airplay & network capabilities - https://uk.kef.com/products/ls50-wireless-2
Or have both with the mini dedicated to film duty & your uber expensive speakers & the apple tv routing to KEFs or similar.
Or get a 2nd hand 3rd gen Apple TV HD that had optical out, but doesn't do 4K.
Is this still called AirPlay?Well Apple Music lossless now plays on the original HomePod. Not sure about other devices.
