Neither me or my wife were eligable for a upgrade, hoever about a month or so ago our accout status was changed and both of our phones are now eigable for upgrade at reduced pricing.

This is the same thing they did when the 3 g came out

Will the handset prices/price plans be announced at the WWDC or will we have to wait longer for that??

Will the UK prices be announced at the same time as the US ones?

What happend last time??

seems like an awful lot of work just to get a new iphone?

If you think about it, it's not really a ton of work. Just buy the new one and sell the old one. (Oh, and sign your life away for another two years, haha.)

If they actually reveal the new iPhones at WWDC, they'll mention the prices as well as any changes on AT&T's side.

Same here.

What's the most the phone could cost if I simply walked into Apple store and said "I want that new phone and activate on current acct"?

If the rumors are correct with keeping the same price points, I believe that it would be $199 for the 16GB and $299 for the 32GB. You've also got to tack on that $30/month data plan per iPhone (unless AT&T offers data-limited plans).

Last year they offered iPhone customers a special upgrade to be able to upgrade to the 3G at reduced price even though we were still under contract. Hence I sold my original iPhone for $400, bought my 3G for $299 all for a net of around -$50 with tax and all that jazz. I don't see a reason to assume a similar situation won't happen this time around..

Those prices are for new activations. You won't get those prices activating an iPhone on an existing contract.

The first-gen iPhone was not subsidized by AT&T, so they had nothing to loose by offering the new one at subsidized pricing. The iPhone 3G is heavily subsidized, so by letting existing users upgrade for a reduced price they would be loosing a lot of money. I would not expect to see AT&T offering the new iPhone at the $199 price point for existing users.

If it's the same as it happened in the UK last year:

Upgrade (restarting your 18 month contract), pay £99 or £169 (pending what models are being released. That was 8GB, 16GB respectively), keep your old iPhone, unlock and sell. Resulting in a tidy profit of somewhere in the region of £150

What about for new iPhone customers.... like me!!??

What prices can i expect to pay??

If the rumors are correct, $199/16GB and $299/32GB. This requires that you have an iPhone plan or the iPhone data plan ($30/month) tacked onto your current plan.

Those prices are for new activations. You won't get those prices activating an iPhone on an existing contract.

Right, users with iPhones currently (and are not eligible for an upgrade) get "discounted" pricing which happened to be the same as new activations during the original to 3G upgrade. Not sure if this will be the same for the 3G to new iPhone?

Sorry guys, I misread. I didn't realize AT&T was subsidizing the 3G by about $200. Wondering if the "upgrade" pricing will be new user cost ($199/299) plus their $200 loss ($399/499)?

I understand ATT trying to rape an existing cust for the phone. It was my understanding that when you buy from the Apple store it is not activated, as a new cust. You take it home and setup the ATT acct. Am I wrong? If this is the case, prices from Apple store should be 199-399. One would think.

I might do this. How would it work on a family plan? I am one of the extra lines on a family plan, so if I cancel it would I still have to pay the ETF? Then, I would probably get a prepaid Verizon or something and come back and add the line back to the family plan. Does anyone know if I still have to pay the ETF if I'm just canceling one line of a family plan?

OMG this is pointless!

You pay $200 dollars more for the phone since you don't get a subsidy. With his system, you pay $200 in early termination and activation fees. The only difference is with his system you have about 10x the amount of hassle. Don't even waste your time.

as noted earlier, activation fees usually get dropped...ETF is $125 if you bought the iphone when it first came out...

The possible problem with this plan is that when you cancel your service and attempt to come back that AT&T may start your upgrade eligibility back where you started...aka having to wait 6-9 more months before you are eligible..

Another possibility for family plan people is to use an existing upgrade or add a line and cancel after 30 days...

Still worth while if the higher end phone would cost you $599 from AT&T if you were not eligible for an upgrade...

Cost for phone from AT&T (if same as iPhone 3g):$599
Cost by adding a family plan line then canceling: ($299+$175+$9.99 for one month of family line service, assuming you cancel the data plan on your iphone 3g during that month and you can talk at&t out of the activation fee)=a savings of $115..

Another question..will AT&T/Apple allow you to purchase this phone at the $599 price even if you are not eligible for an upgrade? not sure what the protocol is for this and how it differs from the contract-free $599 iphones (which weren't offered until a few months ago..

Also...$200 more? in what world? if you are not eligible for an upgrade..and assuming they dont offer early upgrade pricing on the new iphone for a few months..where are you getting the "pay $200 more"?

Look guys, there is no point in arguing over this. We can start talking about how fair/unfair AT&T is after the keynote on June 8th.

Weeks after the iPhone 3G was released at a $199/$299 price point, I had many friends that easily sold their original iPhone for $400-450 on Ebay.

I'll then list my iPhone on Ebay for hopefully $450-550ish and then pay my credit card bill within 30 days to prevent any fees. Depending on the "discounted upgrade" price, I expect to pay little for the new iPhone (if not actually making some money that will go toward a new case).

The flaw with this is that the original iPhone was and remains the only one that is 100% reliably software unlockable. 3G changed things so that it is very hard to unlock it. The original iPhone was (and may still be) a hot commodity because of that.

I worry that I won't be able to sell my 3G when the new one comes out... Anyone think there will still be a market? I hope so..

u will have to pay first months bill plus activation fee so whats the point

im eligible 7/12 anyways :D so i really dont care what u do

edit: and another activation fee when u come back to att as a new cust

How are you eligible July 12 when you have an iPhone 3G? Have they updated their database lately?

Mine hasn't updated the upgrade date BUT I'm still paying for the iPhone. It might stay at the 399/499 price point though.
