I won't lie, my heart skipped a couple of beats when I first read the headline.

Then I reread it and realized - much to my disappointment of my naive but hopeful little heart - that it did not say "How to Get the Old Apple Back"

I want my mail to dl and notify about new emails automatically as it used to, not only when manually launched, for god sake

or just lean into it. Take a few minutes and set it up and it actually works pretty well.

Does it? I've been dreaming about automatic email categorization for ages. But I want something beyond "this is your electricity bill". I want for example that an email referring to two separate projects be put in two categories, one per each project.

How do you get the app icon to show the number of unread emails again?

My main problem with categories on iOS is that the entire email now no longer loads and you have to click “see more” on every one. If there were a way to show the entire email, as in list view, I’d probably use the category feature.

I would use this app but I need gmail push notifications so I use a third party app instead for all my accounts.

Yep. This is a dealbreaker for me. I believe it only does push for iCloud but not the others like yahoo or Gmail.

How do I get it to show the business icons, instead of the very generic icons I get now?

I kinda like the new setup. Very efficient and i think it categorizes mail quite well. I am actually surprised it works so good at early stages

I’m glad the new categories work for some. The best thing I ever did to cleanup my inbox was unsubscribe. It’s crazy how much useless stuff piles up. Now I only have useful emails that require little maintenance without the new Categories.

I would like to get audible email notifications on my iPhone 15 again, because ever since I updated to 18.4 all email notifications have been silent. I see them on the Lock Screen but they don’t make any sound.

Sounds are enabled in settings, of course.

I can't use the new Mail interface at all since 18.1 when it broke the connection to my IMAP mail server. And it's still broken months later. Now using Outlook, which sucks, but at least it "just works."

The one feature still keeping me from switching to Apple Mail for work is the lack of the ability to stop emails from being automatically read when selected and the preview window is open.

It's interesting that so many people complain about this when Gmail and other mail apps have been doing this for years, hence the request from users to bring these features to Apple Mail. But I wouldn't call this "going backwards" per se when Apple clearly gives you the option of using categories or the older list view. #EveryonesACritic

Also, as someone who has multiple mail accounts, I have list view turned on for my professional email, and categories turned on for my junk email account (which I'm sure many of us have as well). I find categories useful for that type of email address, especially if you're in any of the 4 categories, just tap on the category you're in and mail will automatically switch to a "hidden" All Mail category. This allows users to easily toggle back and forth between viewing your mail in the order in which it was received vs. categories.

Apple Mail has been periodically ducky for me for the past several years. Not sure why I still use it, other than it's native, not from Microsoft, and doesn't require a subscription. (My current bane are single messages that suddenly pop up to the top of the inbox despite 'followup' being turned off on all my devices.)

It's really telling that with all of Apple's "amazing" new features lately, all most of us want to do is go back to how it was. Apple seems to be going backwards with software.
It is all driven by what Cook wants to say during the Keynote. Common sense, good design, usability, bug free timeframe are all thrown out the window. After all, the only important thing is for Cook to look good for his various 30 second appearances during the Keynote.

Apple Mail has had bugs for decades at this point. I haven't used it since Tiger.
