You're not going to be saving $400, only $200. Don't forget, you have to pay the ETF if you cancel your old line. In the end, the phone will cost around $500 when you factor in the $175 ETF.

oh s h i t thats right, i forgot about the ETF. Thank you. Well, i guess it would be cheaper to keep then to keep $9.99 second line for the 12 months. This way if i keep it, then that line will be eligible for the upgrade in 2 years, and my current in one will be eligible next year.

Honestly I have absolutley fried my brain over this whole thing. Is the 3GS THAT much better then my jailbroken 3G? Prolly not, but it doesnt matter cuz..
I GOT TO HAVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:)

I actually did this last year for the 3G iPhone. I wasnt eligible so I added a line to get subsidized price then cancelled it in 30 days. However I think I got lucky because I was not charged a ETF because they said I called right on the 30th day. They also did not ask for the hardware back so I ended up getting the 3G for the subsidized price , without the ETF, and contract free:)

LUCKY B A S T A R D!!!! I hope the force will be with me as it was you Lasteve :)

I sold my iPhone 3G 16GB on eBay for $450. After fees I made $405. The new phone after taxes was $550. Therefore my out of pocket cost is $145.

Doesnt the ETF go down five dollars for every month you're on your contract? Is there any way to use this to an advantage?
Yes for any contract signed on or after May 25, 2008 the ETF is reduced by $5 per month.

So anyone that bought the iPhone 3G on or after July 11th launch should qualify, unless they purchased something after the iPhone on the same line and reset their contract again.

Yes, this has happend for many and this is one of the reasons that some are seeing the $599 / $699 pricing when they think that they should qualify for the "Early Upgrade" pricing.

That's what I was thinking. Wouldn't it be a ton easier to just sell the old phone

Question. If you sell your phone on EBAY, what are you supposed to do without a phone till this Friday? I'm thinking about doing it, but I don't want to be without a phone.

Also, what's all this talk of the phone being $750? I thought the 32GB was $499?

Unfortunately, no. Every month your ETF decreases $5, you pay $10 on your monthly bill. The longer you keep the phone, the more the added line will cost.

If I do add another line, though, and keep it, would I be on a cycle where at least one of my lines will be eligible for upgrade when new iPhones come out? (Assuming my current phone is eligible for upgrade before next June) Or is my upgrade eligibility dependent on the last time I upgraded any of the lines on my family share plan?
