It's best practice to have a local backup of your device stored on your computer in case something goes awry, or the worst happens and installation of iOS 18 fails.
It's also quicker than restoring.Especially on older devices, the most important thing you can do is a clean install of iOS 18.

It's also useful for moving device backups to an external hard drive, if you want to save some space.. just remember to backup, archive and overwrite with relative frequency...I was today years old when I learned of the archive option.

Not going to lie my work iPhone is an 11 and I’d wish they’d drop support so I can upgrade. It’s the last device in my house that’s lightning charged at this point.Feel like this could be a bit of an adventure on my XR. Hey ho…we’ll see what happens.
