Bumping for usefulness.

About to try the approximate steps on my iPad.

Edit: worked, although getting into recovery mode was a little more fiddly. FW umbrella has iPad as a device in the dropdown. Secondhand info indicates you should select both the Apple and Saurik sources (I can't confirm this but I did it anyway).

Me too! Ready to jailbreak!

Quick easy tip for putting in recovery mode:

Slide the power off. Hold the home button while you connect to USB with iTunes running.

Works on both the iPhone and iPad.

Hi guys,
Sorry I am totally new on JB thing. I need to confirming that I am doing the right thing.

Here is what I did for 2) Using The Firmware Umbrella (MAC)

1. Run Umbrella.app while mine iPhone connected with USB on normal mode.
2. Enter phone's ECID into the first box
3. Choose iPhone 3GS - 3.1.3 in the Device Version dropdown menu.
4) Choose Saurik - Cydia in the SHSH Repository dropdown.
5) Click Submit.
After couple seconds... In the Umbrella status it shown "SHSH Saved! File: xxxxxxx-iphone-3.1.3.shsh".
That mean I am done?

If I am doing wrong, please explain on lay man term. Thank you.

Yes, you're all done. Your SHSH is now on file with Saurik and saved locally on your computer in the folder that contains Umbrella. Put it in a safe place!

Hi thelatinist,
Thanks for your info. I have another question, where the Umbrella saved mine SHSH file in locally and what is the actual name of that SHSH file.

Thanks again,
Eric

On osx is saves to whatever folder it ran from. The file will start with a long string of numbers, I think, I'm not on my mbp right now.

Thank very much. I re-run the umbrella application and I can see the file.

Hmmmm, I've tried option three but when I open the 'hosts' file it already has the text at the bottom! Do I add it again underneath?

Just bumping because while Spirit is spreading like wildfire, the 'backup your SHSH files' message from the weekend is getting lost.

so I see this is for storing the SHSH on the 3GS. what about us 3G users? my JBed 3G is running flawlessly with tethering enabled. I want to preserve my iPhone this way if and when I need to restore to 3.1.3 in the future.

how will us 3G users store our SHSH?

The 3G doesn't require a SHSH. This is an extra "lock" that only applies to newer devices (3GS / newer iPod Touch / iPad).

okay, so then what happens if and when I need to restore again to an older firmware? what's going to keep iTunes from preventing that?

I thought iTunes doesn't allow any backwards restoring?

None of this info is applicable to a 3G. You can downgrade to your heart's content because apple only signs for newer idevices... but as you can JB a 3G on 3.1.3 through a number of methods there isn't much point to this.
Downgrading FW will not allow you to unlock if that is your goal.

Try it in DFU mode. But this is not the thread to post about it in. If you still have problems, post in the iPhone Hacks forum. Or search for error 1015...there are dozens of threads that have answers for it.

Its ok, sussed it.. you need to repeat the restore twice, get the plug into apple logo, then look up a tut to using iRecovery.

It is too late to get your 3.1.3 SHSH since Apple has stopped signing that firmware version. You will have to wait for a new jailbreak tool to be released.
