Put the speaker and camera on top or on the edge, or do a notch around the whole screen so it's not that one notch.

But they'll do that for the next phone and act like it was a new idea. Which is why I'm waiting for the next one

No, the notch makes it iconic. Easy for other people to see you have an iPhone X, and also distinctive when used in icons, etc... Without the notch it looks like every other Android slab.

Edit: I'm not saying I like it especially (I'm indifferent right now), but it's definitely distinctive.

I expect the notch to get smaller in a couple of years but not go away.

As a design attribute this is going to be with us for awhile.

Nothing is going to change for the next iPhone in 2018 regarding the notch. Apple is is Not going to majorly change this design in over one year. Over the course of time, it might change or marginally decrease in size. But it will look the same next year in all likeliness.

I don't know what got y'all saying that, because the big fat notch will disappear before too long.

And I'm going to come back and say I told you so, like I always do.

A notch around the whole screen? So basically a giant iPad-proportioned bezel? No thanks. The notch was the best solution to the problem of incorporating the sensor array into an otherwise bezel-less phone. I don’t even notice it while using my X.
It's not bezel-less, it has a big fat notch on the top. At least if you extended it around the whole display, it would be more subtle, and by that I mean you wouldn’t notice the big fat notch.

A notch around the whole phone = bezel but yes I think they should have just left a small uniform bezel up top but that would have left us less screen space.

Well, if the big fat notch extension was thinner, it might technically have a bezel but it wouldn’t be anywhere near the kind of bezel we had on all of these phones, nor would we have the big fat notch.

To the point where you don’t really have a top part to the screen without the big fat notch in the way.

You can double tap to bring the screen down from the big fat notch, which pretty much turns it into another bezel.

I hope this is the first and last model with a notch. It may be iconic but is useless and makes the phone “unusable” in landscape mode.

Actually the notch does nothing for landscape mode, other than shifting things slightly to the right. Apple is the one who made landscape "unusable" by giving it the wrong size class when in landscape, making all apps use single column layouts.

Also in landscape they should have just blacked out the notch and added bezels.

I agree. I don't have the X but I did stop by my local Apple store and played with the X for about a half hour. Honestly, after 10 minutes I did not notice the notch. However, this does not mean the notch isn't a terrible design choice.

It's all a preference, but I think it was the best choice. Stretching the screen to all four corners is a nice touch.

I think it's a compromise. Apple did not want to go full bezel so we got the notch. Unlike many here, I understand that the notch is a needed design element to house all the fancy sensors and camera tech. If you were to draw a line under the notch across the device, anything above this line should be a bezel. Instead apple gave us the notch and extended the screen around the notch. We actually gain screen space.

Exactly, definitely a compromise, but needed. Nowhere else to put that tech right now. Not a huge deal though as many had originally thought.

I say that Apple or another manufacturer (Samsung, Google, LG, etc) will be able to put these hardware bits behind the screen someday. It may be a few years but it will happen.

I was about to say the same. A notch around the whole screen sounds like a candidate for 2017’s Worst Idea on an Internet Forum.

Maybe some of the sensors, but not the dot projector and not the camera for sure.

I actually like the notch. And after a day or two of using my X, I didn’t even notice it anymore. Watching videos in full screen even with the notch isn’t really THAT bad.

The notch isn’t going anywhere for the next few iterations. I expect them to make it smaller and smaller until technology advances to the point where they can house the sensors, front camera and earpiece behind the screen.

But, until then. Notch it is.
