I followed this thread with interest and downloaded netshade to see how it works. It does work, although strangely only in safari. If you use firefox or Opera it has no effect and your real IP is visible. So I guess this would mean that it wouldn't hide you from using a torrent either...

What about with torrents? I have read a few stories about people being busted for there IP addresses, is there any way to block anyone from knowing my location and handing me a lawsuit?

The Pirate Bay has set up their own VPN service that doesn't keep any logs. It's still in beta but once it comes out it will cost around $7 a month. Think about it before paying for it though. You're paying to pirate something. If you're going to pay to pirate something, you might as well just buy it legally.

You can always purchase an VPN account (such as www.strongvpn.com) to make all your traffic be routed through one of their servers, hence making everything you do online being traced to the VPN provider. It's quite easy to setup and manage (native support in Mac OS X Leopard for the standard service).

Many of the VPN providers often provides speedtests or test account for trial usage.

There are many uses for using a VPN other then pirating. I use my work's VPN for personal traffic all the time when I am out and about on a public wireless LAN.

The Pirate Bay's is just the same. Just because you shell out 7 Euro's to use their service doesn't mean you'll be using it to pirate.

I know, but the majority of the people using the pirate bay's VPN service are probably going to be pirates. I bought a VPN a while ago and use it all the time (not for pirating, but for security).

NetShade is the fastest and the most straightforward, but it's $30. You get what you pay for. :)
http://www.raynersoftware.com/netshade/

You only have to pay for it if you use their own dedicated proxy. If you use the software to connect to various public proxies then it is free. Netshade works very well, the only drawback is that it only works in Safari, a browser I don't normally use.

If you want to hide your ISP IP address, then proxies are the way to go. However, I don't recommend using web based proxies. It is better to do it through the OS. To do this, open up system preferences --> Network --> Advanced --> Proxies, and turn on and fill out whatever proxy you want. If you want to hide your ISP IP address while surfing the web, then fill out the "Web Proxy".

This is an OLD topic but I've become interested.
Warranty Voider - if you're still around, can you talk into this idea a little more? (Anyone else who understands this better than I will do as well...)

You know, the concept and a little instruction for the novice!
This indication is that "proxies are the way to go" but, rather than a web based proxy, that it would be better to "do it through the OS." I'm scratching my head a little as to the details of this - ie:
HOW do I "fill out the 'Web Proxy'?" --or--
WITH WHAT INFO do I "fill out the 'Web Proxy'?"

i was waiting....

....for someone to just come right and say it. "what about torrents" thats what this question is really all about, right?

basically yes that is what it is about. But beware that MR doesn't have freedom of speech so be careful when discussing torrenting and the like...

thanks....

....i will be more mindful. I just bought a mac, so doing things "privately" presents new challenges all over again. (I could've bought an amazing pc for the money i paid for this macbook pro)

anyway, I'm trying to use "vuze" for the mac and it just seems like everything is right out in the open.

It seems like there are three ways to anonmyize your ip:

1. hotspot shield. This is free (I hope), and it works for me, BUT

a. you can't choose an ip from a list as with netshade. Netshade's list lets you choose the fastest route?

b. every time I try to open hotspot shield, it opens safari as well, even though firefox is default.

c. this one's important: hss installs a pop up ad in every window you open!

2. tor/vidalia. it doesn't seem to work, as far as I can tell. when i check the ip, it doesn't change as with hss and netshade.

3. netshade. allows you to choose a route from a list of public proxies. But they charge $40 to start.

Are there any security concerns with a public proxy? In other words, am I sharing data with other users through a public proxy?

Second, what if I double up by using two or all three? Will that increase security?
