So I got an Samsung 980 Pro 2TB SSD. I'm using it in an Acasis TBU401 external Thunderbolt enclosure with my M2 Mini. The problem is that older firmware versions of the drive have an issue that can brick the SSD. Samsung offers a Windows only tool to identify and update the firmware (Samsung Magician). Doesn't help me though as I don't have a Windows PC. How do I identify which firmware the SSD has? System Info shows the UUID (whatever that is) but no firmware version. Any apps I can use? Ideas?

After searching I found a tool for showing the necessary information about my SSD called “DriveDX”.

Luckily I have the newest firmware. No need to update. That would’ve been an additional hassle.

Thanks for the update. I’m awaiting the arrival of the same SSD to go into a Konyead USB4 enclosure, so will check this out.

hey there, i've bought this exact same set up except ive got an M2pro mini, i'm only getting 980mbps read and write speeds, am i doing something wrong?

I doubt the firmware is the issue, but you can check what version you have. Go to System Report --> Hardware --> NVMExpress and find the drive. You can see in the Revision field I've got 5B2QGX7

Also in System Report, go to the Thunderbolt/USB4 info and find your enclosure. See what speed it reports. Mine is up to 40 Gb/s:

Also, what format did you apply to the drive?

You sure you have the 980 PRO and not the non-pro? Please make sure you’ve connected the drive to a Thunderbolt port. Did you use the cable that came with the enclosure?

The original question was never answered so I'm highjacking this thread to ask it again.

I have a few Samsung 850 Pro SSDs that do not have the latest firmware. So I went on the Samsung site and downloaded the latest firmware updater, flashed it to a USB stick, was successful in getting it to boot, but it keeps telling me "No supported SSDs detected for firmware update".

I have an 850 Pro SSD in an OWC Drive Dock connected via USB to an iMac 2017. Is there some other way I need to connect the SSD so the firmware updater will see it?

You might be able to get the firmware updated if your computer is booted into Windows and the disk is connected over Thunderbolt. It's unlikely that USB will work at all and I doubt the USB bootable firmware update has any Thunderbolt support included at all.

I tried connect my acasis TB405 with 980pro onto pc with windows pc, samsung magician showing the disk is not supporting. Guess only work with TB port as you mentioned. Gave up.

My Samsung SSD EVO 970 with thermal pad has a temperature of 65°C=149°F in the Acasis TBU401E Thunderbolt enclosure. Should I be worried?
