how to import dvd into I movie

I've tried to import dvd into imovies. (its some video I shot of my band) but all the files were erased so how do I import them as I wish to make a video clip from them

Handbrake should do the trick for you. It'll convert the DVD video to a format iMovie can import. You may want to max out the settings to not lose much quality.
