So does anyone know a way to import .m4b audiobook files into books on iPhone? like is there any app or shortcut to for it? I currently have to copy the file onto my Mac and the copy it back to iPhone to import it, it’s really dumb to have to use ‘iTunes’ for this simple task.

It depends on the source. Audiobooks purchased from within the Books app are opened by tapping on your Books > Library to access it. Are these files from a different source? You should be able to do it directly in the Books app on your Mac by using Add to Library, which then syncs across your devices.

These are not purchased form audible or Apple book store, they are made by my friends. That’s why they are not in the books app in the first place.
yes I know I can use a Mac to import to my book library, it’s just a bit redundant and I’m moving away from Mac, using only iPad. This is actually the last few tasks I NEED a Mac for.

Hey, I totally get that. I'm 100% iPad Pro + MK now, and I'm keeping a list of possible reasons to need a Mac again at some point. None of my reasons are very important so far, but yours for the .m4ba does sound like a hurdle. Let's hope someone is working on an app for that.

added: wait a second ... what if you kept all of those audiobooks in a folder in the Files app (or other file browser app) and opened them in Books via Browse. Would they play? It works for movies; I would guess it might work for audiobooks. You could then copy them locally to your On My iPhone storage.

Hello,
I had the same problem... on my iPhone ibooks app my audiobook did not appear (but all the ebooks do). I downloaded a third-party app called Bookplayer. It does the job. I can create a folder for the book title and put all the tracks in it.

In my iCloud drive I created a folder for Audiobooks, then sub-folders for each title. When I add them to Bookplayer, I can create a playlist for my audiobook title. It works well for me and I can move tracks around within a playlist to change the order of play.

I bought a new desktop computer this summer with the latest OS and I've been very disappointed how iTunes is no longer available. I haven't found the Music app to be user friendly and the fact we can't play our audiobooks on ibooks is ridiculous. BUT, Apple's Book Store is everywhere, can't escape that.

So I can just drag and drop them into books on an Mac and transfer them to an iPhone, but I just can’t ’open in’ on an iPhone directly?

I'm also looking for a way but Apple wants to sell their own DRM books so they don't make it easy. When I add an audiobook to Mac Books app, it doesn't even sync to other devices.
