again, new to mac, previous window user. about 6 weeks ago after reading posts here about Al Dente, i downloaded the program, went to my download folder, clicked on the zip file and unzipped the contents, double clicked on the al dente file and installed it. set the max charge to 70% but the battery kept charging to 100%, finally removed the program. a few days ago after reading more posts on the al dente thread i decided to download the file again and give it another try. but this time i did something different with the file.

after i downloaded it and unzipped the file in the download folder, and before double clicking on the al dente file, i moved it to the "application" folder, then double clicked on it and installed it. set the charge limit to 70% and now al dente works!

is this how you always install 3rd party software programs? would seem so since al dente worked doing it this way....lol

The vast majority of programs you download are full binary packages. Just move them to your Applications folder and you’re good to go. Rarer cases will use the Installer app which will be more familiar to a Windows user. A third option is to download from the Mac App Store.

so i assume that with most of the binary programs like Al Dente, that i do the install like i mentioned, moving the executable file to the "application" folder before executing it. thanks for your reply and info on the 3 different types of installs.

yes, it usually works better if you are running the app from the applications folder. Some might work from anywhere but others just don't work.

I also have an Applications folder on my home directory. This automatically gets the same folder icon as the main Applications folder. I mostly use this for software that I don’t necessarily fully trust or apps that are temporary. The good thing is that putting software in your home Applications folder doesn’t need admin permissions.
