Hi,

I read that the latest AMD GPU drivers include optimisations for GTA V so I wanted to try installing them on my Retina 5K with a M295X GPU. A couple of months ago I had tried without success but I figured now that the M295X was available in other machines something may have changed. I really didn't want to mess about with editing .INF files or copying old versions of installers over as you may have seen in previous posts about the subject.

I am running Windows 8.1 (64 bit).

My previous drivers were AMD's official Bootcamp drivers dated 16/12/14. Found here:-
http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/bootcamp

And this is what they looked like:-

So I tried to download the updated drivers dated 13/4/15 directly from within CCC. It was a non starter, CCC appeared to freeze.

I went direct to AMD's download page here:-
http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows+8.1+-+64

I selected the Win 8.1 64 bit drivers and downloaded them. I did not uninstall the previous drivers. I ran the executable which unpacked the file. I let them unpack to the default folder and navigated to C:\AMD\AMD-Catalyst-15.4Beta-64Bit-Win8.1-Apr9\Packages\Drivers\Display\WB6A_INF and ran CU182335.exe

Everything installed no problem and I have not noticed any specific issues. I can alter the resolution on my display (no 5K). I quickly ran 3DMark across them and did not see any particular performance enhancement that couldn't be written off to 'margin of error'.

And here are the new drivers:-

I hope it helps somebody else out.

Thanks a lot, it works and I can confirm it works on Windows 7 as well.
EDIT: Not really. See two posts below.

OK, so it ended up being a very bad idea. Did you have any chance to test how the driver works? Maybe it's just me, but this is what happened to me.

Shortly after installing the new driver using your little workaround I fired up GTA V to try it out. Graphics settings were messed up but I thought it was just because the driver is new, but then the graphics settings tab detected only 512 MB of available video memory (as opposed to 4096 it saw and worked with previously). So I turned off the game to make sure everything is installed fine - which is when my screen went all weird (see first picture) and the compter froze. After a hard reset I got a BSOD (second picture) - I hadn't seen one in months since installing Windows on the iMac. Even booting into safe mode froze a couple of times, so I tried the boot repair option and it ended up letting me into safe mode (the regular boot again failed with a blue screen), where I completely uninstalled the AMD driver package, rebooted and reinstalled the whole Boot Camp driver package and then on top of it installed the latest AMD Boot Camp drivers from December. Now everything works as it had before.

It seems there is a reason why AMD makes these drivers incompatible with Macs AND labels them Beta. From now on I'm installing only the latest supported boot Camp updates from AMD.

This worked perfectly for me. Windows 7 version for me though. No blue screens, no issues. Driver is updated and it runs smooth as silk now.

Imac 5K running with the 4GB video card. Thanks again!

Out of curiosity what settings are you guys running on GTA V? For me the game just stutters with some serious drops in FPS. Have the RiMac with the upgrade cpu and gpu

doesnt work

GTA thought i only had 512mb of memory after this, didn't work out for me.

running windows 8.1

Thanks for the tip for installing the latest drivers on the M295X. After a reboot I ran "Dying Light" and performance in the menu was terrible. So a quick uninstall and I'm back to the old drivers from AMD's site :(

(Win 8.1 x64, RiMac i7, M295X)

Unfortunately this doesn't work well for me also. I would add the the whole Bootcamp feels noticeably slower with occasional black screen. It is sad that a Tonga GPU has been waiting for this long without even an official driver upgrade to AMD Omega.

Ok so I have a 8core with D700's. I was fed up of GTA 5 only using one card (with the pre omega driver) so did this work around and amazing now GTA 5 works butter smooth in crossfire. WOOP!
It's amazing made such a difference.

Thanks so much for this discovery!

Hello,

I installed the last beta driver as indicated on my iMac 5k with the R9 M295X.
Everything looks fine but :
I played Witcher 3 and the game is aweful even with low settings and lag quite to much.
Lots of black sceens and other weird problems.
There is something wrong even if catalyst seems to be well installed.

I played the game for 20 hours with the bootcamp drivers before with high settings and very good fps.
But the game crashes often during fights, that's why I decided to try updating the drivers.
This issue is a dead end. I would have better to buy a tiny MBP and a playstation ...

Hi, i'm having the "video card seen as 512MB" issue after the driver update, has anybody found a solution?

I tried reinstalling Windows 8.1, removing the official Boot Camp drivers or updating them but every time i start a game performance is horrible because the card is seen as having 512MB of VRAM. A friend can figure it out. of mine tried the new drivers and they work wonderfully, performance is greatly enhanced. We are all using the same computer with the same software, what is the difference between those who have no problem and those who have it?

Maybe if we put some more information we can figure it out.

Thanks

No luck with 15.7 either, but I was only lucky with 15.4. Other Display adapter versions worked but throttled. TOD, we need your help xD

For me, the problem is not that. I can mod or expand the drivers so it lets me install them. However, I will get stuttering while gaming and display driver adapter crashes. And the worst of all, Windows boot loop crash cause of corrupted drivers installed :(
Thanks for the info anyway LiquidSpikes. Last CCC I can safely install is 15.5 for iMac5k m295X
