What's up everyone. I'm having a problem with X11. I was installed the X11SDK package, and then tried to install GIMP. GIMP said that X11 was required inorder for it to run, so I'm assuming something went wrong with the installation. Can anyone help me out? I've tried to get it working and have been unsuccessful.

Thanks in advance.

X11 and the X11 SDK are two different things, I believe. Try to put in your Tiger DVD, run the optional installs pkg, and find the X11 option. When it has worked, you should see an "application" called X11 in your utilities folder (this app launches the X window manager, and is automatically called by GIMP.app).

X11 will show up as in app. You either need to download the X11.pkg from Apple's site, or install it from your restore discs. Good luck...

i had this same problem yesterday with open office

You either need to download X11 from apple or Install if off a OSX disk if its on their. In Tiger you can ONLY use the one on the Tiger disk, the download one will not work

I was looking for the same thing. My Power Mac came with the Tiger install DVDs (recovery discs?), but they don't have X11 - I checked both the DVDs. It does have an 'Install applications only' option, but that doesn't show X11 in the list of apps. :(

I checked on Apple's website and http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/x11formacosx.html shows a download dated October 2003 for Panther! :(

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11/ just has a description of X11 - no links to download for Tiger! :(

Can someone point me to the location where I can download it for Tiger (10.4.1)? Would it be available with the latest OpenDarwin (http://opendarwin.org/en/news/darwin801.html)? I see a 400MB OpenDarwin download at http://www.opendarwin.org/downloads/8.0.1/darwinppc-801.cdr.gz

Thanks! :)

They do, actually, but it's not very convenient to install, not that I could ever figure out anyway. I wasn't able to install X11 properly without re-installing the OS, and choosing X11 as one of the options when doing so. (In the same way that you can choose to install or not various language files, printer drivers, etc.)

for future references if you wanna install x11 via the tiger package navigate to the following folder on the tiger dvd.

/System/Installation/Packages/

double click on the X11User.pkg and install.
