Hey guys

i currently have iphone 4 , on ios 4.2.1, with modem firmware 03.10.01. its jailbroken from a while ago.

How do i update to the jailbroken 5.0.1 untethered?

iv searched so many places and there is so much information. are there any simple and safe steps to do it? would i be able to with this modem firmware?
it is an unlocked phone (in that i can use any network sim card)

How do i initally back up my apps then update to ios5 jailbroken , then get my apps back?

Any help would be amazing please

thanks alot

thanks for your reply

i went to that site, but i can only find the main tutorial, but does this pply to me as i have already jailbroken in the past? like it says i need to install 5.0.1 , but it seems to be thinking my device is not jailbroken already? or do i still follow exactly the same steps if my devidce is already jailbroken?

thanks again its really appreciated

Is your phone factory unlocked?

do you mean was it brought unlocked? yes it was i didnt do anything to it.

can i use the link you posted to jailbreak to ios5.0.1? so does that mean that i need to update via itunes to 5.0.1 first (as is in the instructions)? im scared of doing this as its the legit version!!

also, what does it mean 'if i want to preserve my baseband' , or 'create an unlock'?!

thankyou

1. Backup phone in iTunes.
2. DFU Mode
3. Upgrade to 5.01
4. jb with redsn0w
5. Restore in iTunes

Also, you were asked if your phone is factory unlocked. Is it?

Some basebands can be unlocked using ultrasn0w I'm not sure which ones as my phone came from apple shop.
If you are sure your phone is factory unlocked them you don't need to worry about preserving the baseband.

i don't think 03.10.01 is unlockable.

You can update to 5.0.1 via iTunes or do it will using redsn0w it doesn't matter I have done it both ways and they both work fine.

Done forget to backup in iTunes first.

i dont understand what unlockable basebands are? or preserving my baseband ? im not sure if my phone is factory unlocked unlocked? but i did get it from the apple store.

it was originally 4.2.1 when i bought it and i managed to jailbreak it untethered using greenpoison. since then i didnt update it and i didnt update to 5.0.1 tethered as i was waiting for the untethered version which has come out.

thanks again

If you are able to put a sim from a non supported carrier in your phone (tmobile in the usa) and you are running 3.10.01 modem and not using a gevey sim then your phone is factory unlocked.

If you are in the us and the phone came form the us why not tell us your phone's model number? If you aren't in the us then call apple and give them your model number and ask them if its unlocked.

These are all the model numbers for factory unlocked phones in the us

iphone 4

* MC603LL/A is the black 16GB version.
* MC605LL/A is the black 32GB version.
* MC604LL/A is the white 16GB version.
* MC606LL/A is the white 32GB version.

iphone 4s

* MD234LL/A is the black 16GB version.
* MD241LL/A is the black 32GB version.
* MD257LL/A is the black 64GB version.
* MD237LL/A is the white 16GB version.
* MD244LL/A is the white 32GB version.
* MD260LL/A is the white 64GB version.

If it came from apple store then don't worry about baseband.

Backup via iTunes
Upgrade to 5.0.1 via iTunes(easiest way)
JB with redsn0w (follow tutorial in link)
Then sync with iTunes.

Good Luck.

I bought my 4s 32g white AT&T for full price in d US but I'm using it in Africa. The model number is MC921LL but apple support told me its factory unlocked. How true is this?

thanks guys

yes my phone is from the apple store in the UK, and they said it was unlocked when i bought it (ie i can use any sim card),

if it wasnt factory unlocked, would this cause problems?

thanks , just wanted to check before i try

Unless AT&T has their own unique model numbers ( I don't know) then you don't have a factory unlocked phone, or it didn't originate in the US. Look at the model numbers I posted above. Maybe the refurb factory unlocked phones have different model numbers.

When you connect to Itunes does it say anything about your phone being unlocked? Does cydia say you have ultrasn0w. last what baseband do you have settings general about and modem firmware. We wanna make sure you keep that unlock. ;) before you rejailbreak.

You're fine, you got your phone from same place I did.

So i will back up my apps on itunes, then update software legally on itunes to 5.0.1, then download redsnow and follow the steps on http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=18989&laid=
and then after im done connect to itunes again and re-sync to get all my apps?
so i dont need to worry about baseband/carrier unlock etc??

is that right?

thanks again guys, its a great website

last question - why do some go wrong? like iv seen a lot of threads with 'iv bricked my phone' etc etc?

you can't brick a iphone threads are from people that don't know better. you can use something like xbackup or pkgbackup in cydia to backup and then restore your jailbroken apps. it sounds like you are unlocked but I'd make sure 1st other wise there is no going back. just tell us the modem firmware.

If that tutorial link is any good then yeah, that's the process. If you have a factory unlocked phone then you don't ever have to worry about modem firmware updates.

Bricked means dead. Period. The phone will never work again. Most of the idiots on this forum use the term brick to denote any condition of the phone that is other than normal. These same people "brick" their phones multiple times in a day - whatever the heck brick means to them I don't know. It's completely misleading to those who don't know any better.
