How to jailbreak my 3G?

Im new to all this and would like to be pointed into the right direction to jailbreak my phone. Im currently using 3.0.1
Im not sure if I should be using redsnow or what. When I tried redsnow I got a wait for rebooting messages 30 minutes later message is still there.
So Im thinking I may be using the wrong type of hack program.
Any help would be appreciated thanks!!

Did you point redsn0w to the 3.0 file? And when it hangs at waiting for reboot, unplug the phone and plug it back in.

Yes Im using the 3.0 file but I will try to unplug and plug it back in, thank you
