iPhone XR How to keep a kid's phone safe in a backpack?

Any suggestions on how to keep a kid's iPhone safe while it's in a backpack? One of my daughters recently found that it's not good to keep her phone in a backpack with 20 pounds of books. It was an iPhone 5 with a basic case. I suggested she use a pouch away from the books if it has one. She'll be getting a new phone with Otterbox case for Christmas. Maybe something to keep that in while it's in the bag?

Check this mini-Pelican case. Not sure if it can hold a phone that is in its own case.
