How to keep HD spinning?

Was wondering if there is a way to keep my external HD spinning even if it isn't doing anything.

e.g. I watch a movie, pause it and after the HD stopped spinning it causes the movie to stutter when I resume playback.

If you go into system preferences and the energy saver pane. Uncheck put hard disks to sleep when possible.
