, the mandatory sentence is having to live with a intel p2 processor powered pc running windows 95 for life

I actually shivered. It just sounds to cruel!

I would just unplug the harddrive :D ! Many people will still buy eMacs, so just convince your dad that its dead and tell him that you'll get rid of it. Plug the harddrive back in and then stick in on ebay or craigslist or whatever and get some cash ;)

I just thought of a good one, open up the case and detach the power cable from the switch, put it back together, and just try to turn it on :D

I know it's immoral to kill a perfectly good computer, especially when it runs flawlessly for 7 years. It's just so tempting... I might do it. Any other thoughts and suggestions are welcome, and I'll keep you updated as to my thought process and decision:D
So do you want it dead or mostly dead?

If you want it dead, you can cook the GPU and that might do the trick. But if you want to resurrect it later on I would suggest unseating some RAM. That causes all sorts of problems and gives quite a good impression of a dying computer.

Why not just erase the HDD? Then there's no need to open it up. They'd fire it up to see the folder with a question mark on it (indicating that the computer cannot find a boot-able drive). Seems like the simplest solution that wouldn't cause any damage to the computer. eMac's are tanks (I own one) so it'd be worth keeping around. You could always re-install the OS after the new computer gets purchased.

Rename some Library folders to gibberish. Unseat RAM. Install 10.1

All should make it fairly unusable. ;)

Get a job and buy your own computer and quit worrying about how to **** up your parents property. Not old enough to get a job and buy your own computer? Go play outside.

i wonder what this guys problem is. did he (or she) even read the op?

Warning!!!

Id open it up and unplug the hard drive.. and maybe take out the RAM.

DO NOT OPEN UP THE COMPUTER!!!

You can remove the RAM on the bottom, without taking it apart (although it wont have much inside - 2 old units, those 800 MHz ones hardly had 256MB, if that much inside).

But more importantly, the HDDs are not worth to remove them. Old and small IDE/PATA drives, you have to risk touching the CRT circuitry that - even days after unplugging it - can cause FATAL electric shock.

I'm serious! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OPEN IT! I have two old eMacs from the garage - they last forever, but in the end, you only want to keep the RAM, if it's more than 512MB, otherwise they are worthless, and the wifi card (from behind the black cover of the optical drive, if it has any Airport Extreme).
