Hi everyone. In the last few months I downloaded a few of the recent OS versions from Apple. I have one of these called InstallMacOSX.dmg, which is not helpful since I cannot remember which version of OS x it is. Double clicking the dmg file does not reveal the answer. Is there any way of finding out what OS X version this is ?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

As far as I'm aware, Apple has never supplied OS X in a .dmg file. Can you mount the file and provide a screenshot of the file inside it?

Hi Nermal. Thanks for your prompt reply.

The download links are contained in this Macworld UK article from a few months back :

The file I downloaded does mount, and the screenshot is as follows :

Thanks again.

Interesting; I wasn't aware of those alternative downloads. I suppose you could start redownloading a couple to get the file sizes and then cross-reference them against the ones you have.

Hi Nermal. Thanks for that. I found the information I needed by doing the following :

double click dmg file
double click pkg file
click continue
with the "welcome to the OS X installer" window active, go to file > show files,
then a window pops up called Files from OS X
open the flippy triangle and every file will be named with the version of OS X

Thanks again
