Nice tutorial but to be clear this is NOT an ios 12 thing. Do not disturb has existed for a while
Yeah, it's unfortunate that there isn't an option to bypass DND but not the side switch.
One caveat to this, if you have your phone's side switch set to silent / vibrate, the sound of the call or text still comes through.
Unfortunately that only works for calls but not messages which these days (and for quite some time now) have been fairly synonymous with calls for many.Isn’t that effectively what “Allow Calls From: Favorites” does?

Yes it’s a caveat, and the point of this feature. Hence the “Emergency” part of the name
When I learned this the hard way it actually was my stock broker who called me but I was in a meeting where even he was banned to call me. So, this feature is great, but only use it if you know that you never will forget to turn your phone off if you need it to absolutely not make any sound since the mute switch won’t do it.This would've been useful for doctors, realtors, brokers, etc. I was expecting phone calls from.

Yes, and that’s a VERY important caveat.
I learned this the hard way while being in a meeting where my phone was supposed to be completely silent (yes, there are such occasions) and all of the sudden the phone started playing the ringtone. It took a while for me to figure out why the mute switch didn’t do its job.
So, even though this is a great lesser known feature, you should be carefull playing with it!
To sum up, this feature doesn’t only affect the DND setting but also the mute switch—be careful since there’s no way making sure your phone stays silent once you enable this feature (except for turning your phone off)!
I guess that's the nature of "Emergency" in "Emergency Bypass".This drive me freaking nuts. If I put my phone on vibrate, WHY would I want to hear a ringtone, EVER? I work in a cubicle farm, and it's very annoying to receive a call from my wife and have it ring so everyone hears it, as opposed to just vibrating. Is there a way to avoid this and still allow the emergency bypass feature to work?

Add her to your favourites list and allow contacts in your favourites list to bypass do not disturb mode which respects your mute button just allows calls to ring and/or vibrate in depending on your settings.
I wish doing this would allow text messages to come through, not just calls.
Doesn't it allow it? I'm thought it does.
Yes, this is unfortunately true. I was hoping the switch would be more of a global silent, but oh well. One caveat to this, if you have your phone's side switch set to silent / vibrate, the sound of the call or text still comes through.
