Is there anyway i can lock my mac, but still allow programs to run. Like when i am downloading something, but I need to run to the store real quick. I don't like leaving my computer logged in and running alone.. if my friends and family cant get into, then they wont mess with it.

does lock my mac work?

Go to "Security" in System Preferences. Under the "General" tab set it to require a password immediately after sleep/screen saver. Whenever you leave your computer, activate the screen saver or put the display to sleep and anyone that tries to use it will have to know your password or they can't get in.
