Does anyone know if it is possible to make the iStat widget (or any other widget) stick on the desktop without having to go to the dashboard?

i don't think you can. However, you can download the application version of similar programs (e.g. coconut) and then use system preference to open them at login.

You certainly can, as the previous reply noted you just need to turn on developer mode.

Open up terminal and type "defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES", then log out.

You can then drag any widget out of dashboard and onto the desktop.

Check out the full hint here on MacOSXHints.
