use Activity Monitor, find it in Applications/Utilities, in order to check at any time what is using the most ram, processor cylces and more .. :D

Exactly! Don't guess, just look. You can sort by CPU load, memory, etc. Also, the fewer PPC processes you run the better. In my experience there is a large increase in performance going from 512 MB to 1 GB. Your observation of Activity monitor can clue you in on whether or not going to 2 GB was worth it. If you are running Parallels or have a big iPhoto library, or want to be able to absorb the Safari memory hog, then go for 2GB.
 
i was actually able to get 4 gb in my macbook, and it reads it all fine, this term im going to find out how well it works because i have a flash class starting monday

Like others have said, disabling dashboard might be an option. I use a little widget called dashquit which lets me close dashboard and tells me how much ram dashboard is using (32mb atm). Dashboard will re launch as soon as you hit the dashboard key. I found this handy. I downloaded it off the apple sight i think.
