How to make the Mavericks dock 2D?
This is something I've wanted to do. And before you say "there's no 2D dock in mavericks", there is. Set the dock to the left or right side of the screen and it's in 2D. But have it on the bottom and it's 3D.

The main reason I want it 2D is the mark under the app in the dock to say an app is running is pitifully small with the 3D dock, so I want the 2D dock to make it better.

Anyone have an idea on how to do this?

I think I have a temporary solution for everybody that has his Dock connected to the bottom. I just replaced the 'shimmers' (is that the right word?!) with my own design! At least it's more visible which apps are open.

1. It's very easy. Download the Bar or the Triangle. (2 png's)
2. Go to the System folder -> Library -> CoreServices -> Dock.
3. On Docks right mouseclick "Show package contents" and navigate to Contents -> Resources.
4. Make a copy of the 'indicator_medium.png' and 'indicator_medium@2x.png' to a different location.
5. Copy the 2 png files to that location (identity controle window pops up)
6. Restart and DONE!

You can customize the other files if you want to for the dock left or right from the screen.

EDIT- I got it. Logged off and back on. Awesome! I'm gonna toy around with a few things and customize stuff like that now haha... thanks for that!

Disregard: That didn't do it for me. Do I need to reboot? I moved the dock from the bottom to the side and back again, indicators didn't change. I notice there are other indicator files there- 'small'. Do those need changed as well?

Thanks!

Glad it worked! I edited my post to mention the restart. Sorry for that!

Thanks for this tip! I like your triangles better :)

BTW, no need to log out, just restart the Dock. Open the Terminal and type killall Dock, it'll restart the Dock.

Ugh... I really hoped there will be a solution here.
Why apple is so retarded when it comes to user preferences.
I don't get it.

Hate that 3D dock with all my heart. It's hard to read in many occasions.

I'm always surprised when I see someone is using the dock on the bottom. Putting it on the sides is much more efficient -- it takes less effort to move the cursor sideways than it is to move it up and down. I find having the dock on bottom puts more strain on my wrist over a day of working. Another benefit of having the dock on the side is that it's a more efficient use of space on widescreen monitors. Vertical document space is at a premium on widescreens, so why make that worse by putting a big dock down there?

For all the reasons you like the dock on the side, I like my dock on the bottom. ;)

What are the @2x.png files used for? Many thanks.

Ok, here you go. I got a little creative. I hope I'm not offending anybody. And the border is manually created not by a defect.

That... my friend, is positively hilarious.

I'm still pissed that Apple is taking every last bit of customizability out of the OS. Toolbars aren't even customizable like they were used to... seriously, WTF Apple.

I wasn't sure if that falls under the swearing category or offensive category. But now I can clearly see which apps are open. The finger is directly pointing to the app in question. And only finders are open. The rest are closed apps.

I don't know how to make the dock 2d. But I figured out how to make it look like classic. Remove the dock and it looks like your in "OS9" press "OSX" days.

Here's how:

Partiton in 2 and install 10.9 on 1 partition and 10.7 or something else on 2nd partition. And then boot to 10.7 and delete dock.

System, Library, Core Services. The dock is in there.

Or Right click dock app and show package contents. Then move contents folder to desktop. Cuz if your in the same partition you want to remove dock from (like mavericks) then you can't. But you can drag the contents folder on to the desktop. After you restart the mac then you go back to core services and delete the dock app. It will ask for your password and then its gone after you empty the trash.

Restart one more time and your good.

Now your desktop is and replaced with grey background and dock is gone. Feels just like "MAC OS 9".

Don't forget to backup dock. So you can replace it if need be.

I have auto hide turned on. Suggest anyone who doesn't like the dock or thinks it shouldn't be on the bottom because it 'takes up too much room' do the same.

Yeah, and now Exposé, Dashboard, and Mission Control won't work. Try again, son. Mac OS X is Fort Knox. Impenetrable... unhackable... unless you REALLY know what you're doing.

We've all tried it. Nothing has worked. Nothing will. It's a fact of life.

Don't give up kunai. Someone will crack it. The Dock Unix Executable file is only 3.3MB, how hard can it be for someone who as you mentioned really knows what they're doing? This is the kind of thing people are waiting in line to pay for. Just hope whoever does it makes it not just 2D but also transparent-able.

Your dock png files just have those on the bottom, but my dock is on the left side, can you provide some more png files for dock on the sides?

Thanks a lot~
