There seem to be other actions that change the view (usually to icon view which I do not like), and I cannot find a reliable pattern for those changes.

If finder could reliably keep my windows in list or column view after I saved them that way, I would be happy :(

i know, it's pretty annoying. i've had pretty good luck. the only one that's a problem now is opening my HD from the Desktop. no matter what i do, after a Log In or restart it always wants to open in icon view, and worse, they display in an awful mess. one thing that you could do i open up com.apple.finder.plist which is located in the preferences folder in your user Library. in here you can make changes that should stick using true/false on/off type statements etc. it can be annoying to pick through though. there's a lot of stuff in there. other than that the only thing i could think of is to write a script that will open certain windows and set their views how i like.
