when I plugged in my iphone and clicked sync in itunes
it downloaded all my pictures to the mac and DELETED THEM on the iphone
why does this happen?

You have it set that way.

You can sync them back into a folder but you cannot sync them back to the camera roll.

The PhotoSync app allows you to transfer photos to (and from) an iPhone from a Mac or iOS device. When transferring photos to an iOS device it allows you to put them in the Camera Roll or any other album.

Just use the new photos app on the Mac. Put all your photos in there and let it sync up.
