I never really understood why any app has authentication on the iPhone. You have to authenticate (touchID) once to open your phone right? Other than if you leave it unlocked and someone picks it up (who leaves it unlocked?), why are we double unlocking?

Not everyone locks their phone.
It may work better for some to not lock their phone... especially if the only thing they want secure is their notes.

In my case... I use my iPad at work & often share with coworkers. Thus, I do NOT lock it.
Buuuuuut.... obviously, I don't want them to have (even inadvertent) access to my personal notes. This works well for me.

Good point about iPad at work. Would be great if Apple added something like "pro guest" mode: imagine to force touch on an app and select "add to guest mode" after which iPad locks or hides everything except this app or goes to real guest mode with empty default state apps but the app you just selected will have all the data you want to share with your coworkers.

I have not updated to iOS 9.3 or OS X 10.11.4 yet. So what happens if update to iOS 9.3 and not OS X 10.11.4? If I lock a note on my iPhone, will it be locked or unlocked on my iMac? Will it even be transferred to iCloud?

What is even more ridiculous is that once you lock a note then there is a lock icon next to the share button... so why not always show that lock button instead of putting the option in the share sheet?!

Button or icon?

YES!!!
I understand that there will be extra app complexity / app containers with multiple user data, etc. but with now 256gb iPad options, this no longer seems like a big issue!

Okay. So they don't allow opening or editing a note without password but allow the note to be deleted? How cool is that?

I emailed Cook and Phil Schiller this idea in details but have little hopes for a reply, never got one before :)

Getting a strange message when trying to set up notes. When I try to turn on passwords, I get a message that says I have to go to Notes and upgrade my notes.

Anybody run into this? I'm running iOS 9.3 on every device, and OS X 10.11.4

I can't find anything anywhere that allows me to select to upgrade my notes.

EDIT

Never mind. Just discovered there is a small "upgrade" button by each notes account, on each device, which isn't apparent unless you're viewing the master index.

I agree. Sometimes Apple is just..., shall I say.. unnecessarily retarded? Like no AirPlay icon in music in iOS 7 but there is one in video. Now there IS AirPlay icon in music but not in video. smh.
