How to pause or know progress of disk encoding

I just thought to start disk encryption all at same time por my 4 external hard drives and my iMac seems to go nuts

How can I pause the encoding? Any way to know get a feedback, maybe via shell, on encryption process?

Can't help with the answer to pausing it, but the time it will take will depend on the size of the drives, how fast your computer is, and whether it has a T2 chip or not.

However, it can take multiple hours for a single HDD.
