How do I perform this? Any easy way with “easy” instructions for a beginner? Without a G4 upgrade? Is this possible with 1GB RAM on 500MHZ DV SE DVD iMac G3 2001?

This is her. I really would like Leopard on it. I don’t know how that Darwin port stuff works?

Install the utterly useless Leopard WWDC preview and you can do it. It looks just like Tiger and is less up-to-date and runs less software than 10.4.11.

Otherwise, unless you upgrade it to a G4, nothing beyond the Leopard WWDC preview will work.

It’ll run on a G3? Do I have to modify anything or will it work?

Wait, where could I find the ISO/DMG?

Saw it. It does look like Tiger. What’s the first Leopard Preview that looks like Leopard? What about:
Mac OS X Leopard build 9A466?

Just want to get the leopard feel on it.

If all you want is the Leopard "feel" just theme it:

Aha ok! Where can I get Mac OS X Leopard build 9A241?

I will
download and install that. It’s the first beta of Leopard the 9A241 that still looks like Tiger.
It’ll work on the G3, right? Then I’ll skin it to look like the Retail version of Leopard. Is this possible to download it- I can’t find it ANYWHERE!

Why would you use the beta with less functionality than an actual proper version of Tiger, like 10.4.11? If you’re going to go through all of the trouble to theme the OS to look like leopard, I’d think you’d want to do it on a version of Tiger that is actually stable and runs all of the applications compatible with Tiger and a G3 properly.

There are some apps I need that require 10.5 or newer. Also, It has more applications and features. I just really want Time Machine too. I don’t need it to look like Leopard though that would be cool. I would just use the first version of CDock.

Do you know where to get the first beta build? 9A241?

Most of the apps that require 10.5 will not function on the beta build, especially one that early. In addition, I don’t think Time machine was even included in that early of a build, and if it was, I seriously would not trust it to back up any information safely. Also, any app that requires 10.5 as a minimum is not going to support the G3 processor at all without heavy modification, since it would be designed to run on either a G4, a G5, or Intel processor only.

Thanks for the seriousness. You do have a point. And I guess 10.4.11 is the same. If I do it, I’ll let you know. Thanks to @Jack Neill I now have the link for the build!

Thanks all! And cheers Jack!

If it wasn't all in storage, I'd pull out the iBook G3 I have that's running 9A421.

There's honestly nothing to it other than just being able to pull up "About this Mac" and have it say 10.5 and PowerPC G3. It really is less functional than 10.4.11, which remember is still somewhat newer than the WWDC preview build of 10.5.

Yeah. I saw that. It needed a G4 upgrade to do it though. I bought a PPC 7410, that should be here by now.

I didn’t want to perform that upgrade so I posted a guide on how to do Leopard Beta on a G3! Link below.

Trying to get Leopard run on such an iMacG3 is a waste of time IMHO.
That iMac is fine for os9 and Tiger and can cope with a lot of contemporary tasks, but Leopard wouldn't make it faster but mere slow down for something impossible like current web & video.
My fun is to get "underpowered" machines fit into current network and workflows and do fine.
Everything beyond is more frustrating than the quirks of Win98 - which I did "enjoy" at it's time more than I liked.

My PPC 7410 came in the mail yesterday. I looked online and the Power Mac 2,1 and the 2,2 are the only ones to be compatible with a 7400/7410, I bought a 7410. (I have a PowerMac 2,2) @dosdude1 It should work right? I didn’t see any videos on a 7410 in a DV SE iMac G3, the only one I found was dosdude1’s Tray loading upgrade. The video is here. Is that a good reference? He uses a 7409 though.. Here’s my new PPC G4 I’d like to use.

Also, my current iMac is 500MHZ. Will I have to do changes to the receptors?

The first post in the thread I linked to says that 9A303 is the last build to run on a G3. No G4 upgrade required.

I'm curious as to what would actually run on that build. Would it be just as incompatible as the WWDC beta build?

It is the 10.5 beta, but because it’s a beta and not fully developed, it’s not going to run designated 10.5 applications.

But with my G4, i’ll try the upgrade, and if it succeeds, then it will run Leopard without mishaps.
