I have been with my iPhone 5S for 2 years and it's a great phone I eve used. I replaced its with iPhone 6S last week and planned to sell the 5S to a local resident. I followed a few tutorials after searching on forums and Google but the method won't work in my case. When I hit the erase button on my screen, then it stays there forever.

Any other alternative than doing it on my iPhone?

To delete your iPhone data, just perform the "Erase all content and settings". But this method won't completely erase data and still be easily recovered by some data recovery app. I personally recommend using iPhone data eraser app to delete your personal data.

Just make sure that you remove it from your iCloud devices so that the next owner faces no activation or iCloud lock issues.
