There probably is no feasible way to prevent this is there? I have used my 3GS case free for 2 years and there isn't a single scratch on it because I never placed it in my pocket with keys or coins. The only problem is the dust and lint that accumulates in the grills due to being in the pocket.

Is there any feasible way to prevent this? Or is it just the nature of owning a cell phone?

Happens with my phone too... There's no real way to prevent it, but you can get rid of the lint concealed in the speaker grill by taking the case off, taking the back off the phone and and using a cotton bud or a toothpick to get it all out :)

Maybe like a compressed air can might help? I read that vacuum cleaners were great for fixing iPhone 4 home button woes.

check eBay. I purchased some plugs for my 3GS a whole back and it worked pretty good.

Buy some blue Fun Tak. Take a chunk of it, press it into the speaker grill and pull it out. Voila, no more lint.

Wait, is that the case for the speaker grill or will it actually blow everything into the phone?

I doubt anything will get in. My 3GS speaker looks as clean as a new iPhone, despite it not being a new phone. I didn't even know they get dirty.
