These suggestions work, but go to Applications --> Utilities --> GRAB. This feature will allow you to do all these features in what I think is much easier than trying to remember those key strokes. I keep GRAB in my Dock and when I need to elect a screen or a part of a screen whether on the net or a file that I just want to see a portion of, it is pretty easy. Works great in cropping actions in WP items or photos. The resultant item can be saved about anywhere you choose and in several formats.
