mods- I vote that you install a filter that blocks any posts with the words "How, Do, Get, and Avitar" in the title.

nahhh

i remember asking the same question my self many moons ago

I don't see why there isn't a message in the user CP under avatar that says you can't have one until 500 posts. Would that be so hard? It's obvious the system can count how many posts each user has, why not just have the statement there until enough posts are reached?

^^ Is it so hard to read a site's FAQ/Rules prior to registering and posting?!

I always do that. Just like I always read a manual before turning on/ assembling something.

Certainly not, but many seem to have an aversion to doing so. Last week my sister came over and asked me to look at a certain form that she was going to complete and return to a city agency. Before doing so, she wanted to know what should be included to verify income. On the instruction sheet it stated in the clearest terms imaginable what was required to accompany the form. I asked if she even took 30 seconds to look at the instructions and she said no. Go figure.

But it's the same type of person who won't read the FAQ that asks the question, so it's kinda a catch-22. And now that we've made DCapple feel bad, I like the new (old) avatar e. That other one was freakin' me out.

That's because you're a girl.

I only ever get the manual out after the new toy is smouldering on the floor from countless attempts at repairing permissions, irrespective of whether it's a Mac.

Allow me to kindly suggest you try to reset the PMU on your new set of off-road tires before installing them on your vehicle, good sir.

And make sure you trash com.apple.tires.plist if OutThere's suggestion doesn't help.

And if that doesn't work, that's when AppleCare comes in handy...just make sure you make it look like it's not your fault.

is there a sticky for guides on getting an avatar / forum reputation & post levels?

if not, there should be; it would be more than useful.

S

There is a sticky but I guess people don't see it...

i have found it now......took some lookin', maybe it could be linked from the user control panel maybe. then again, i could be asking too much.

:D

S

That could actually probably solve a lot of the questions...if people went to load an avatar, and there was a little message saying "can't load an avatar?"

I think it's funny that so far there are only two people (including me) that have replied to this post who don't have avatar's.

That's probably because most of the people who don't have 'tars are currently rummaging about in their User Control Panels trying to figure out why they can't have one... ;)

I second that. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get an avatar for a while, but then about a month after i'd given up I figured out why.

Me too  Although it's partly because I like sneaking open the box on the Tube/bus home and reading about it as the first step of enjoying my purchase.

The suspense of not doing that to my Powerbook when I bought it nearly killed me... so then I had to read through it when I got home which delayed turning it on even longer.

Thankfully, I can speedread so it never takes terribly long to skim through it to see if there's anything worthwhile. It's saved me a few times though from making expensive mistakes.

I was in such a frenzy while I was waiting for my PowerBook to ship that I downloaded the manual and had read it before it arrived....

There are a number of sticky threads that no one new seems to see.

"Can't post?" shouldn't be that difficult to see. Maybe, flashing red letters would help?
