My girlfriend had her iPhone stolen. She is going to borrow my old iPhone. We have some issues setting it up because it starts asking for the 2 factor verification code.

The iPhone keeps wanting to send the code to her phone number, but as her phone was stolen she obviously doesn't have access to that number anymore. Why can't I choose from the phone to receive the verification code on her Mac, which is also set up with her iCloud ID?

I'm on her Mac now and I also can't do much on this computer because it wants the verification code. I was hoping to set up my old iPhone with her Apple ID, and then one device should have been able to request the verification code for the other device.

Any ideas for how we can get the verification code?

In our possession:

- Her Macbook with her Apple ID.
- My iPhone 6 restored with her backup from her iTunes on her Mac, and which is now logged in with her Apple ID.

My Apple ID
Login and under Security you can add a number or trusted device

Thanks, but the thing is when I tried adding my number as a trusted number, it also asks for the verification code. So it seems we need the verification code in order to add a trusted number

Did she change her phone number?

She had her SIM card closed after it was stolen, but in a couple of days she'll receive a new SIM with the same phone number as before

If her stolen iPhone is the only trusted device, she should have her carrier move her number to a new sim on the borrowed phone.

I thought her Mac was a trusted device, but I'm not sure now. How do we check to see if it is a trusted device or not?

From your Mac:

  1. Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > iCloud.
  2. Click Account Details.
  3. If your device is offline, click Get Verification Code. If your device is online, click Security > Get Verification Code
