i have regular leopard os 10.5.8
my user directory doesn't have a "private" folder, therefore that string completely doesn't work for me. i've also searched through the folders, and really nothing seemed to work. any ideas?

It's not letting me look in the Caches. It says 'permission denied' even in the admin account. Maybe one has to log in as root?

There is this online video playing trough Silverlight software which i am trying to capture with quicktime video screen capturing. I am having two unexpected trouble
1) is i use the imacs internal microphone and it distorts the sound.
2) although it views perfectly fullscreen while i am capturing, once i play the resulting .mov video the image slows-down and sort of gets stuck for miliseconds but its still visible as the image speed is not smooth and normal.
Can anyone help? Suggest any other capturing software or has any ideas on how to capture a video I dont seem to find the source to, to download.
I even checked the html code of the website and tried to find the url to the original video source but it seems to be impossible as it seems to run trough the silverlight software and it doesnt show the original video url. Maybe someone wants to give it a try as well.

I use Snapz Pro for ALL video streaming and screen captures. Although it's not free, it's modest price and ease of use make it well worth it. Records mov files (QuickTime) to your location of choice. You can also choose size, compression, frame rate etc depending on the quality and size of your desired output.
FWIW I couldn't see any difference in quality when I recorded HD streaming videos at 30/fps versus 24/fps, although the latter files are quite a bit smaller.

I’ve been working with Snapz Pro for a few weeks, but have run into problems with the audio falling out of sync with the video. A recording I captured a few days ago (running time: 4 minutes) was fine 60% of the way in, then the audio hung up, pushing back approximately five seconds behind the video.
Reattempted three more times for a clean capture, but no luck. Kept “sticking” midway through (at a different point each time). FYI: The online original is fine, no halts, pauses, or delays, so it’s gotta be Snapz.
Bummer, since a friend in Denver can capture nearly everything on his PC without a problem.

BTW, there is huge difference what you chat for streaming video and progressive download. Actually all sites that provide you download video from do a progressive download, and other sites where the stream is live, they are streaming. Try google : progressive download vs streaming

Guess you get what you pay for. I tried six different videos from six different sites. Each one resulted in a This video site not supported message...and none were obscure sites.

I know that I saw a program a while back that could do this and seemed legit. I just didn't pay much mind to it then. I am wanting the same functionality. Luckily, I have few friends with PC's and therefore don't have the apparent disappointment you do. I'll keep looking and post what I find.

Possible Solution
Try using Firefox. Download the add-on called "Ant Video Downloader." When you open the page in Firefox that has the video you want, there will be a small button at the bottom right of the browser that says "download." That's where you get it. I am downloading a video right now and it's a .flv format and seems to want to work. We'll see...Good luck!

Folks, I came across this program called Jaksta (www.jaksta.com), that seems to do just the trick. It is an actual stream grabber, so no encoding of the display. Works like a charm on a non-standard site I visited, that has a video that was deployed through a custom flash front-end. I was surprisingly impressed. The software even has a free-trial period. May it be of use to some of you guys too.

I had the same prob but now have the solution try this, should help
Download and install the latest version of Real Player from Real website, keep Real Player open while browsing the web pages whr u have the streaming videos, now open the Real Player downloader which was also installed automatically with the player, go to File>Preferences>check add Real Player agent to login items. Now the downloader will automatically be prepd up to download streaming videos wheneva it finds 1 on an web page u open.

If you use some screen recorder, it will be easier for you to record internet streaming video. It will help you catch everything displayed on your computer screen. I always use it to record video when I was browsing video website.

Easiest way to record ANY streaming audio or video
If you want to record streaming audio or video, or watch it on your tv the easiest way without the problems of installing programs (or filling up your hard drive) is this.
You need a few things.
First, a dvi converter like http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9267G/A
Second, an audio pin plug to RCA plug, and a RCA cable.
After you plug in the dvi converter you will need to set up the second monitor to tv freq.
Third, go dig out that vcr in the closet that you haven't used in years and hook everything up.
This way you can record anything on the vcr or watch it on the tv.
If you want to view the programming from Hulu or some other website from your laptop, hook everything to the tv.
I went one step further, since I am using an Imac, i ran a co-ax from the vcr to the tv (through the attic). Since my tv has two tuners I can switch from one antenna input to the other without any trouble,
This may not be techie enough for you but it works.

Safari 5.1.5 (Snow Leopard) - Can't Download Flash Video
UPDATE - AS OF APRIL 2012
Before my Safari update, the Activity window showed
a large file that grew in size, which I would double-click
to download the video.
That does not work anymore for 3 reasons:
1) I no longer see a large file (measured in Mb);
All I see in Kb sizes.
2) I no longer see a file that grows in size.
3) Double-clicking the file i THINK is the flv,
or doing so with Option key pressed, also does
not work.

I have been playing around in Terminal on Snow Leopard and I have almost finished the code to do this. However I am not very experienced with it and I was hoping someone could help. This is what I have so far.
cd /private/var/folders/ql
at which point I get this "qlWuFQKXEhSZFm5FCPjXgE+++TI" I have no idea how to get the last code though. Can anyone help?
ok I have made it a little farther, however I am not sure that I am on the right track. This is the code I have

at which point I go into TemporaryItems and it gives me FlashTmp0 which it will not let me go into. Any Ideas?

For everyone using Leopard or beyond trying to follow "surfinsd" instructions:
1) The target directory is one of those contained in /private/var/folders, and you have to find which one belongs to YOU. To accomplish that, start playing a video in your browser (Safari, Firefox, etc). While it is playing, "pause" it.
2) From Terminal.app, issue the following command:
ls -lR /private/var/folders >$HOME/Desktop/myvar.trace.txt
This will overwrite any existing "myvar.trace.txt" on your Desktop.
3) cat $HOME/Desktop/myvar.trace.txt | grep Flash
If that command shows a FlashTmp file, then you can find your target folder.
4) cd $HOME/Desktop
vi myvar.trace.txt
Use the Visual Editor (vi) to examine this file created by ls -lR
Use "/Flash" (without the quotes) to find a line with Flash in it.
Somewhere above you'll see a "./two-character-folder-name followed by a / and much longer name that starts with those same two characters and ends in some UPPER CASE two characters followed by another / and folder name.
For example: ./ta/taQuant-G6vxRupeR30+++TI/-Tmp-
Whatever it is, that's the folder trio receiving your video file. Make a note of the front and back: /ta/ta*TI/-Tmp-
I used an asterisk as a universal match because you'll use it with the real video you want to capture. You only need to determine this path once for YOURSELF. Other accounts on your Mac will have different paths.

You can now safely trash the "myvar.trace.txt" file.

Do this while positioned in your flash folder. Make a note of the full name of the file. You should see the size increase as more and more is downloaded, even if you have the video paused. Once the download completes, the size will remain static. Once that happens....
7) cp FlashTmp.suffix $HOME/Desktop/pick-any-name.flv
"suffix" is the appendage on the FlashTmp file that was downloaded.
Pick a name for your final file, and use the ".flv" suffix to identify it.
You can now release your "pause" on the video and stop it.
Caution: Sometimes multiple videos are downloaded at the same time, from different windows in your browser. Be sure you have just one window.
