I have one of the original late-90s Bondi iMacs (with the tray-load CD). Several years ago it got fried by an electrical storm, but i kept it around with the idea that I might extract the hard drive one day and external-mount it.

But getting to it is crazy hard. I can't pull any of the innards out of the case because the internal cable harness is so bulky it's blocking my efforts to get anything out of there. And I don't think I can reach all the screws needed to loosen the inner components.

Has anybody here tried to do this before? Is there an actual procedure for it?

There are some instructions here on how to dismantle it, with pictures at the bottom of the page. Good luck!
