Hi All

So I am fairly new to Mac, and wanted to ask if there is a way to select the first file / folder and the last one and everything inbetween in icon view. I know it's possible in list view but have searched and not getting anywhere!
sorry silver surfer and maybe I'm not explaining myself well in the search.

In word/windows it's shift select the first file/folder and last folder and it selects everything inbetween which mac does in list view but not in Icon view and maybe i'm missing a key press.

Thank you in advance.

Click one file/folder then press Command-A
This is the best solution, but there is also place the cursor to the left of the first icon and click-and-drag to the right and down. As you go down, the finder view will scroll as you drag until you reach the end. Everything within the selection rectangle will be selected.

Click one file/folder then press Command-A
that only selects all the files on that page. Let's say I have 100 files in a folder in icon view and I want to select from 15 to 76, in windows I would click on 15 then click control / click and I would select every file inbetween from 15 to 76.

in mac I have to select each individual file - I don't want to have to keep changing to list view to do this control / click..

Maybe try the following:
1. Press the ⌘2 key to switch to List view.
2. Select the 1st item.
3. Press the SHIFT key and select the last item.
4. Observe that all intervening items are selected.
5. Press the ⌘1 key to switch to Icon view.
6. Observe that the selected items remain selected.

In place of the ⌘2 and ⌘1, you can click the View tool in the Finder window's toolbar, and choose the view that way.

Well, your first message said that you wanted to select the first file, the last file, and everything in between. Honestly I know that I took that to mean all of the files, which Is why I agreed that Cmd-A was the best solution.

OK seems to be a solution , is there anyways I can use the mouse? thank you for your time.
See my other post above. Just draw a square around the icons that you want to select - the Finder view will scroll if you drag down (or up). If you select too much you can always cmd-click the ones you don't want selected.

I always work in list view myself, and in that view, click the first file, shift-click the last file, and all files in between will be selected.

Click on the "first" folder.

Hold down the shift key and KEEP HOLDING IT DOWN, then...

Click on the "last" folder.

Does this do what you want?

In icon view, that doesn't work - it just adds the last file to the selection (as if you used Cmd-click in list view).

Ah, ok, thanks for mentioning that.
I almost NEVER use "icon view", so didn't realize.

It works fine in "list" view (which I use everywhere).
