I need to send a multi-page doc by fax from the UK to the US.
I have a Mac Pro and an iPad and an iphone.
How can I send a fax from a computer or tablet that has no phone capabilities if I have to send it to a US phone fax number?

Agree with Emmeff. I have never found a way to fax with my mac only. I use efax, which is also s subscription based service. They do have a 14 day trial, so if this is a one time thing, that’s probably going to be your best bet.

Most multifunction printers include fax functionality, but you need to have it hooked up to a phone line for that to work.

Aside from those options, your best bet is probably going to be to have FedEx Office/ UPS Store/ Office Max, etc fax it for you. But I do think their prices are kind of steep. Not sure how much to fax internationally though.

You can't. The aforementioned email to fax services are perhaps your best option although that involves a third party and may raise security concerns. In this day and age when pdf documents are so easy to create and attach to email I'm amazed that fax machines are still a thing.

I would say just use an eFaxing service. Look for ones that have apps or plugins, if you need that function. Most have an option to send faxes through email (something like destinationfax#@service.com) and will recognize your email.

If you need some specific software integration... that might be more difficult as I’m not sure there are any fax modems compatible with Mac these days.

You can also look into faxing from VoIP providers as well.

I work in healthcare and it’s ridiculous to me that this type of communication is still a pillar of the healthcare system. But here we are in 2020 and I still have a pager from my hospital.

I to work in Health care and do not understand the love of fax. Since CaOVID have been working from home but still go into the office once a week to fax requests for info.

Luckily most of my faxing (sending/receiving) is handled though the EMR system. But it’s still not 100% reliable and there are still problems with receiving illegible faxes from fax machines.

Faxes, pagers, using software originally designed 2 decades ago, etc. It’s pretty amazing how on one hand healthcare is on the cutting edge of technology but in others lagging behind.

I just get annoyed with my hospitals various routes of communication- patient portal, direct messages, instant messages, text messages, pager, desk phone, cell phone, text message, fax, email snail mail, etc. Too many systems to keep track of, all with different policies and legal obligations.

thanks, I looked at efax.
So if I am sending a fax to a US phone fax number from the UK, I can do so from my computer with the efax service?
Can I do this with the trial version?
Would I need to connect a phone line to my computer?
I'm not concerned too much about security as the documents are not sensitive.

1. I believe that eFax works in the UK, but you'll have to verify that. As long as you can sign up for a free trial, you should be able to send it to the US. I'm not sure if Long Distance Fees are included in the free trial, but you can verify that.
2. The trail version works just like the paid version, except that it's limited to 14 days, so yes you can also do it from the free version.
3. No phone line needed. To send the faxes, you attach the docs to an email & send them to an email address with the prefix being the phone # you are sending to (since it's international make sure to pay attention to how the number is formatted, and then the rest of the email address will be @efaxsend.com The email will go to fax's servers, where they will convert it into a Fax & send it to the fax # you specified. You can verify on their website (or set it up so that it send you a confirmation email) that it went through after a few minutes.
