Technology really SUCKS in the modern world.

You were given lots of advice here that it sounds like you ignored, and just went ahead and hoped for the best.

I am sure someone would even have offered to arrange a test call for you if you truly do not know anyone with a Microsoft account.

Technology is complex, that is how it can offer such diverse and fantastic benefits. (Sure, a lot of it could be better, but there are certainly acceptable workarounds for most of the issues.)

Did it work in your test call?

I don't have anyone to test things out with.

I suspect the wrong mic was selected in Teams vs the system.

No, because I selected my headset in MS Teams (Chrome).

And I enabled camera and mic when I joined.

Plus when I caleld in using VOIP on my MacBook Pro, they still couldn't hear me.

Then I tried calling on my cell, and I don't think they could hear me.

In one of those scenarios they could hear me but said I was breaking up.

I think this issue was on the clients side.

How could audio fail in MS Team, plus when I caleld in on VOIP, plus when I called in on my iPhone using cellular?

I said I have no one to try Teams out with, and this interview came up with little notice.

I have done video interviews for the last 15+ years and never had an issue.

It's kind of ironic that I posted here - feeling paranoid for some unknown reason - when I haven't had issues in the past, and then I ended up having issues?!

Must have been an omen.

You mean like the recruiter who ghosted me?

I asked him to do a test and he disappeared....

I dunno, when I build and program stuff, MY STUFF always works...

Yet people making $$$ hand over fist can't get THEIR stuff to work.

And billion dollar companies can't get THEIR stuff to work.

Yet I can't give my soul away to even get an interview.

Yeah, I "get it" and see how the world has changed...

Enter why I am frantically trying to launch my start-up business...

Microsoft experienced a wide-spread Azure outage yesterday effecting many different services.

It was -7F this morning, and is -28F windchill. (And the weather was bad yesterday also.)

Upon serious soul-seraching, I think the issue was on THEIR END.

(I'm a big enough man to admit when I screw up.)

Now way the audio on an MS Teams video-call fails, PLUS calling in on phone-only on VOIP fails, PLUS calling in using my iPhone fails, and it is "my" fault.

To be honest, I'm really not that interested in this position because of "subtle" things before and after the MS Teams fail...

- Recruiter has blown off emails before the interview

- Recruiter has blown me off after the failed interview

- And the Interviewer was robotic and kept saying "Caller... Called check your mic... Caller do this... Caller do that...." (Dude, you have my resume, and I have a name! This isn't the Howard Stern Show?!)

I have enough $$$ to float myself until April. Maybe this is God's way of saying, "Hurry up and get your business done!" ;-)

What a wasted week...

Oh well, stuff happens.

I'm going to work 18 hours a day for the next three days and try to make some more progress on my start-up.

Then I can regroup on my job-search - next week - after things (hopefully) thaw out.

Burrrrrrr

I'm just seeing this thread now. Assuming you used Chrome for accessing Teams, the problem was most likely that Chrome didn't have permission to use the microphone and possibly that the correct microphone was not selected if it was an external microphone.

I gave Chrome permissions for the camera and the microphone.

And I selected my headset for the mic in the MS Teams call.

However, on Thur, Jan 22...

Ah, that's a bummer. Sorry to hear that it may have impacted your interview.

You mentioned using Teams for your startup business later in the year. People can turn the choice of web conferencing into a religious war, and there are other threads here that beat the topic to death, so I'll avoid that aspect. The only advice I'll offer here is that regardless of what you choose as your platform when you host a meeting, it makes a lot of sense to make sure that you are comfortable using the big three (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet) for when other people are hosting meetings.

Good luck with your job hunting and entrepreneurial exploits.

Well, it looks like my MS Teams fiasco may have been a hidden "blessing".

The recruiter I spoke to on the phone after my technical issues last week never called me back. In fact, no emails either.

Guess I'm naive enough to expect an email saying, "Sorry the client already picked another candidate."

Not to sound "sour grapes", but I don't think this company or the recruiter were the right match... (Call me "crazy", but I still expect people to be professional and treat me with basic dignity...)

I guess that is so last year...

Yeah, that's not good. Anyone who gets an interview should get at least a real email, if not an actual call, to get the score. I'm old fashioned enough that anyone who seriously applies for a position in my group will get at least an email, but it is getting harder in the AI arms race to be as polite as I would have been even five years ago. Any time we post a job opening, we get hundreds of applications (or more), no matter how junior or senior the job is, and the vast majority of responses are just AI slop with little or no effort to address the actual job requirements. It's AI vs AI out there. The irony is that the result of AI-driven job systems is that actual personal connections are more important than ever when job hunting.

This is why I am frantically trying to get my start-up launched. My love of IT and working for others went out the door after the "Great Recession" and most certainly after the pandemic.

People don't want to hire humans anymore, they want zombies and robots. (You would think nearly 30 years of experience would count for something, but not in today's world...)

Not sure if my MS Teams fail was on my end or on their end - although the interviewer complained that I was also breaking up when I called on my cell says the issue was on THEIR END and not mine, and the news links above sorta back me up.

Oh well, life goes on. Let's hope I get back to work before my $$$ runs out...

Heh.
Last job interview I had was in August 1979.
No email back then...
