So now that the OS 9 actually tracks your sleep, how do you set it up? I Know I had it shut off before because you had to set up the schedule for sleep, do you still need to do that?

Any tips would be appreciated.

You have to go into the Health app and set up a sleep schedule.

Yeah, I wish I didn't have to set a schedule cause I don't want it waking me in the morning. I just want it to track how I slept. Is there anyway to do that?

You still need to have a schedule? This is why I didn’t use it before. Apps like Pillow can track your sleep without a schedule using the watch but it’s a subscription. It would be nice if Apple upgraded sleep tracking but I guess they don’t want to cut too much into paid apps because they’re already getting heat for being too competitive and favoring their own apps. I wouldn’t mind tracking my sleep but I’m not going to pay a subscription for it. I would buy an app but not rent one.

Exactly why I didn't use it before, plus it sucked. now that it gives you good details, I want to use it but I HATE the idea of having to set a schedule.

According to one scientist video I have seen on YT, he says that WatchOS 9 is very accurate with sleep tracking.

You can use AutoSleep that doesn't have a sub. Now that Apple has more detailed tracking, I am going to see how it does. That would be one less app to have.

I will definitely try it. Does it matter for tracking if your schedule doesn't line up with when you actually sleep?

"When Sleep Tracking is on, your Apple Watch tracks your sleep and adds sleep data to the Health app on your iPhone."

This is why I hate how Apple does it. I hate having to stick to a strict schedule. FitBit does it much better.

I’ll check out AutoSleep. I think a sleep schedule will work for most people because most people have a set routine but at this time I do not. That pesky thing called work likes to mess up my schedule 😂

While being bothered by the alarm requirement is understandable, having used it for quite a while, I think it’s designed that way for good reasons. It’s not like they’re trying to add such things frivolously just to annoy users. One of the essentials of efforts to achieve and maintain healthy sleep quality and routine, is having that routine. The Health app itself describes it better than I can, something about regular sleep schedule having many benefits, contributing to better quality sleep and health, circadian rhythms, etc. And there are plenty of scientific articles supporting this idea.

Thus, I personally have grown to appreciate that it requires a schedule/alarm. Yes, there are times when it is annoying, but usually it’s not, and in most cases it is helpful to wake up at a certain time.

In sum, if you are interested in tracking sleep quality and quantity at all, it’s a good idea to have an alarm and to go to bed and get up at roughly the same time regularly.

As other posters have stated, the Autosleep app is true to its name, and a good alternative to the built-in Health/Sleep app.

I believe that it’s possible to track your sleep using the Apple Watch without setting a sleep schedule, the only catch is that you may have to activate the sleep focus (it won’t automatically detect random naps).

To activate: go into the Watch app on your iPhone, click Sleep, and make sure “track sleep with Apple Watch” is toggled on.

To view the data: go into the Health app and open up your sleep dashboard. To make sure it’s set up properly, scroll down to Data Sources & Access. There, you should see your Apple Watch listed as a data source. I can see that my watch is indeed tracking my sleep, and I’ve never bothered with the sleep schedule.

I'm pretty sure you can just toggle off alarm in the sleep schedule.
You can. I have mine set for 12:00M - 7:00 AM, no alarm. The Sleep Focus uses the wake time as the time to shut itself off and revert to normal (No Focus) operation. I manually enable Sleep Focus when I go to bed (because it's not always right at midnight), and at 7:00 am it shuts itself off.

You don’t have to set an alarm.

You can set up a sleep schedule if when you’d typically go to bed and wake up, but simply disable the alarm.

I don't understand why you need to 'do' anything. If non-native apps like Autosleep can detect you sleeping at anytime (which it has done for me with incredible accuracy over the past few years) surely Apple can do the same, it seems so counter-intuitive to the usual way they approach their software that I can't help but be completely baffled by the way it is now.
