I don't understand why you need to 'do' anything. If non-native apps like Autosleep can detect you sleeping at anytime (which it has done for me with incredible accuracy over the past few years) surely Apple can do the same, it seems so counter-intuitive to the usual way they approach their software that I can't help but be completely baffled by the way it is now.
OP could always try it without a sleep schedule set up and see if it tracks his sleep. If so, all good. If not, set up a sleep schedule with the alarm option Off.

Sometimes good ol' trial and error is the best way to figure things out when they're not clear.
