Hey all.

Ok, I have a crappy old XP laptop that i need to access the internet with.

The situation is as follows: the xp laptop cannot access the wireless internet and the router is too far away to use.

Therefore i'm wanting to share my mac's internet with the xp laptop via an ethernet cable.

I've searched for hours and I cannot find the correct way to do this.

I would really appreciate your help!

Cheers

Alex

Did you set System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing > Share your connection from: AirPort > To computers using: Ethernet?

Is your XP laptop connected directly to the Mac?

Hey! Thanks for replying so quickly.

Yes I have set up the mac side so that Internet Ethernet sharing is on.

The xp laptop is plugged directly into the MacBook.

Thanks again :)

Hey spinnerlys,

Thanks for the reply! I really appreciate it :)

Ok I can ping both computers. Just to clarify, I did it like this:

xp: cmd->run->ipconfig /all

ping this from osx terminal -> all ok.

osx: preferences->network->ethernet->ip

ping this from xp cmd -> all ok.

Because the ip of the xp machine was 192.168.2.2 i assumed that the osx machine would be 192.168.2.1. When i pinged it worked.

Finally, the IP address that the osx ethernet cable gave was bizarre (because it was self assigned): 169.254.204.169.

Thanks Mate, I appreciate you help.
